Q. We are getting ready to re-do our kitchen and I have no idea where to start. I thought I wanted cherry cabinets but now I am thinking white cabinets. Would you suggest hiring a designer to help me make these selections and what is the popular finish now?
A. Creating the kitchen of your dreams is truly a personal journey. A designer can orchestrate the process and present the design options, reducing the stress level substantially but the final vision has to come from within you. I tell my clients all of the time, this is YOUR dream kitchen, you need to love everything in it! You may start out thinking you are looking to create a specific look and then through the journey you completely change your vision, be open to new suggestions. Take a look at a variety of design styles that you never would consider and you may be pleasantly surprised how your inner designer has more vision then you thought was possible…
Where to start? This is not such an easy question to answer and one that I am asked often. I created a step by step guide to designing your kitchen to help you navigate through the process, read more here. Currently I am drawn to white kitchens, especially with dark wood floors. I love the bright, crisp feel of the cabinetry with the bold contrast the floor provides. Above is a stunning example of this, including unique design choices that were made to personalize the space. Open shelving, beautiful lighting fixtures and uniquely shaped back-splash tiles add to the charm.
If you were looking for wood tone cabinets this is the perfect medium tone, natural cherry. The overall feel of the cabinets is transitional so the infusion of some modern chic details is a nice surprise. The lighting fixtures, back-splash and island seating gives a classic look a modern twist.
Switching up the island finish is another way to personalize your space. I love the mix of classic cabinetry style door with the modern hardware and hood. Below, another finish change on the island with a cottage inspired feel. Some other interesting details are the fabulous fluted legs. fun wine storage and open shelf. I love the organic modern stools.
Designing modern kitchens is so much fun. I love the aqua blue island, sleek cabinet door style and fabulous lighting. Notice the architecture of the house, a colonial cottage. So often my clients will want the kitchen style to match the architecture of the house because they feel it has to. If that is what you love, then it can be the same style, but there is no rule that states you have to follow the architecture of the house. Incorporating a modern kitchen is absolutely an option in any house.
A wood top on the island adds warmth and character to the kitchen. The built in banquette is an unexpected surprise and I love how it feels surrounded by all of those beautiful windows.
Tufted banquette seating, fabulous lighting, marble counter tops and sea mist mosaic tile make this my dream kitchen favorite. Check out Get inspired galleries to see more kitchen eye candy.
