Welcome to the home of Lori and Dan Donza. When they decided to add a great room onto to their 1950′s split level they decided to re-define their style. The goal was to create a gathering room for family and friends to enjoy spending time together, featuring a large farmhouse table and an inviting seating area to accommodate everyone in one space. This is a hip, hardworking couple who is not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get to work. They wanted to make their mark on the design and wow did they ever, just check out these before pictures.
I received the call from Lori to drive by a farmhouse a couple of miles away to check out the color of their barn, yes we have barns and beautiful farmland in New Jersey, contrary to what you may have heard, LOL. I knew the color of the barn already and it was the perfect shade of red for their addition. The decision to add a barn-like structure on to their home was all theirs and I was crazy for the idea, and so excited that they called me in to design the interior.
Before and after pictures of the space are so exciting depicting the process; from studs to drywall and window installations to the laying of reclaimed lumber on the floors and fabulous vintage beams above. Below, Dan has the painstaking task of finishing the floors the old fashioned way, by hand for the perfect finish.
A natural finish was selected for the floors resulting in a beautiful display of the organic character of the reclaimed lumber. Dramatic vintage wood beams were found in nearby Pennsylvania and create the perfect Wow Factor for the room.
We began developing the color scheme by defining what the wall color would be; a rich navy tone was selected to create the perfect backdrop for these fabulous beams and a crisp contrast to the white ceiling and trim. From there we moved on to selecting the perfect farmhouse table for the room and added Lori’s collection of dining chairs in various styles and colors. I absolutely love mixing and matching dining chairs.
Next, we began selecting fabrics in natural linen and cobalt blue with hints of red for a dining chair and an area rug. Comfortable yet stylish furniture choices were kept fairly simple to allow the architectural elements of the room to shine.
The end result is a warm inviting space that they adore and are thoroughly enjoying with their family and friends. We’ll visit The Donza’s again in the future when I talk about their kitchen enhancements, but for now we will leave them to enjoy their fabulous addition. Excellent work Lori and Dan!
