This week we had an AYP first, a reader sent in a design question that involved a dress she bought on vacation. I am so excited to answer her question because we have a column called, Inspiration to Interior that is all about bringing the latest fashion from the runway into your home Q. I am in love with a Bluemarine dress I bought on vacation last year, can I design a room around it? Grace Read more
I was reading about fashion icon Lilly Pulizer and her death this past week at age 81. Her colorful trend setting, Palm Beach attire has always caught my eye, my daughter and I even sported a matching set of colorful shifts when she was little. What I learned is that Lilly Pultizer (with the exception of being a socialite in Palm Beach) was just like so many of us, working to keep a piece of her identity while raising kids and being a wife. It was the late 1950s , her wealthy husband owned citrus groves and she decided to sell oranges and grapefruits from the backseat of the family station wagon to keep busy. Little did she know that this decision would shape the rest of her life. Read more
During Fashion Week I was introduced to hip fashion designer Annabel Kwateng and her brand, Ashanti Brazil. I love to draw upon influences from travel and fashion when designing interiors and was intrigued by Annabel’s style and bold use of color and pattern. Ashanti is the African tribe that designer Annabel Kwateng originates from, she would vacation in Brazil and was inspired by the natural beauty, the passionate culture, and the vibrant colors of the region. Ashanti Brazil is the infusion of African prints with Brazilian color palettes and influence resulting in designs that are fun, flirty and exotic.
Fashion Week NYC Fall 2013 has ended and I wanted to share my favorite dress of the week. Glamour and luxurious designs epitomize fashion designer Jenny Packham, known for her fabulous evening wear and party dresses. Her sumptuous designs have been worn by the most iconic and influential women, from Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Rhianna and Beyonce to The Duchess of Cambridge. Recognized as one of the UKs most successful fashion brands and world renowed. I just adore this dress showcased on the runway at Fashion Week, drawing inspiration from it for interior design is a piece of cake. Read more
In honor of NYC Fashion Week our inspiration for interiors is from some of the top fashion designers from around the world. Today we are featuring a personal favorite of mine, Carolina Herrera. Herrera sums it up best here, “I have a responsibility to the woman of today – to make her feel confident, modern and above all else beautiful.” – Carolina Herrera. In addition to her ready to wear collections she introduced her bridal line in 1987. Read more
I live just forty minutes outside of NYC so the buzz of Fashion Week is pretty loud especially when you are a designer. From fashion runways to luxurious interior design this bold shade of green, which has been a staple in Ireland for hundreds of years, was selected by Pantone as Color Of The Year 2013. As a designer it is imperative for me to be on the cutting edge of color trends and it is such an exciting time of year when Pantone announces their pick. In a European capital, twice a year, Pantone hosts a meeting of representatives from various nations’ color standards groups. After presentations and debate, they choose a color for the following year. The results of the meeting are published in Pantone View, which fashion designers, florists, and many other consumer-driven companies purchase to influence their designs and planning for future product and projects. One of my absolute favorite things about the fall is wearing scarves. Lets be honest, don’t we all feel just a tad Parisian and chic when we put one on. The scarf is the must have accessory; a pair of fabulous jeans, a simple T and voila, you are now fabulous! Read more
One of the best things about Fall is Sweaters!! Hand knits are my favorite and this asymmetrical cardigan in mustard is just scrumptious, don’t you think? Just loving this vintage advertisement, it says it all! Read more
Today marks the final day of Fashion Week in NYC. My designer pick is the fabulous Mara Hoffman, I want this dress, pronto. Her line includes everything from dresses, leggings and blouses to coats, knit sweaters and scarves. She has evolved from hand-dyed silhouettes to her current collection, which concentrates heavily on original silk prints. Hoffman recurrently draws inspiration from nature and fantasy, often finding creativity from her own travels around the world.
