As a fellow designer and working Mom I wanted to share Tory’s inspiring story. Starting out as a fashion copywriter after her marriage ended she began designing clothes in her kitchen while raising her children with a budget of $2 million. Sounds like a lot of money but when launching a fashion line from scratch it is a drop in the bucket. The good news was that Tory has serious talent and the “it” factor. Her hard work, determination and fresh look paid off when Oprah took notice calling her, “the next big thing in fashion.” Less than a decade later Tory Burch’s company is valued at $3.5 billion. Her story doesn’t end there Tory is constantly looking for ways to help others and give back. Check out The Tory Burch Foundation here for The Economic Empowerment of Women and Families.

Best of luck my friends, I wish I could send a tote bag to each of you!

New England Farmhouse

Hello friends, just back from Ireland and organizing our hundreds of pictures to share later this week, what a “grand” adventure we had. Driving in Ireland from Dublin to County Kerry to Galway we found the resemblance between Ireland and New England to be uncanny. The beautiful lush countryside, picturesque cottages, charming villages and rolling mountains that end with the sea were just breathtaking.

No surprise then that our house tour is lakeside New England, designed by John Morris Architects located in Camden, Maine one of our favorite towns in Maine. This year we are renting a lake cottage just outside Camden, a lovely coastal town.

The renovation incorporates the character of an old New England farmhouse with fresh design ideas and a 4900 sq. ft. addition. A touch of turquoise on the front door sets the mood as you enter into a large foyer with vintage inspired lighting and cottage furnishings.

The main living room seamlessly leads to the porch and both are encompassed with oversize windows allowing the beautiful landscape in.  Below, the same concept applies and the exposed ceiling adds to the cottage charm.

A mix of vintage and modern can be found throughout the home even here in the bathroom where antique wicker and abstract art are combined with a pop of turquoise.

The dramatic lines from the steel-clad gabled roofs complement the porch and balconies adding to the farmhouse charm. Natural materials including slate, reclaimed lumber and stone from the surrounding areas were carefully chosen creating a home with real New England character and attention to detail.

What Color Should I Paint My House?

This question comes up weekly between my readers questions they send in and my client projects and it is one that I love to answer! There are several factors that need to be considered when deciding what color to paint your house coupled with you personal taste to find just the right combination.

Your Surroundings- Take a walk around your neighborhood and look at the paint colors. If you want a neutral tone but your block is predominantly a hue of beige why not try a hue of gray? Neutrals can be warm or cool with taupe being a combination of both warm and cool. Neutrals are timeless and my clients seldom tire of a neutral color, color can be brought in with landscaping, a front door color or architectural accents.

Style of Your Home- Consider the architecture and period the home was built to lend some insight. If you are restoring a home you may want a historic color. Certain styles lend themselves to specific colors, for example a Victorian era home may be colorful while a Craftsman style is better suited in earth-tones. Above, this colonial with Southern charm is lovely in a hue of green with cream color trim and a black door and shutters for definition.

Trim, Shutters & Door Color- You may already know that you want a wood finish for the door, a pop of color for the shutters and light or dark trim. These decisions can drive the house color choice because they all need to work together to create the look you are after. You will need to make these decisions simultaneously or prior to the paint selection.

Stone Selection– Is there brick or field stone on the house? Your color choice will need to complement the stone color and in some situations you may find a hue of color in the stone to pull out for the rest of the house. If you have existing brick and you want to paint it a hue of white is a good option if the rest of the house is white or neutral. In the opposite case if you have painted brick and despise it, don’t be afraid to power wash or sand blast the paint off to expose the true color of the brick.

Color of the Roof- If you have an existing home be sure the paint color choice does not fight the roof color. If you are starting from scratch select the roof color at the same time you select the paint color and other exterior details. Above, I selected this color of red for a client based on an old barn they fell in love with for their addition read more here.

Personal Taste- At the end of the day you may not mind clashing with the neighbors or that the color choice does not suit the architecture if the color choice makes you happy and feels like home. Go with your instincts and make choices based on what’s important to you. I can always assist in helping you find the perfect color for your home in Just Askcathy

Six Ideas for Coastal Bedrooms

As some of you know we are in the process of renovating our family beach bungalow after Hurricane Sandy and making good progress, can’t wait to share. For today I am designing the bedrooms and needed some fresh ideas to get started, let’s get inspired.

Vintage Character– In my family we adore vintage finds, collections and treasures. A beach bungalow is the perfect place to add some vintage character with an old bench, distressed nightstand and bottle collection.

Hanging Bunk Beds– Beach cottages are places that family and friends love to gather. Maximizing space and adding beds is always high on the priority list. This fun idea uses nautical inspiration hanging beds from ropes, be sure to bolt to the floor.

Paddle Headboard– Creating a headboard from vintage paddles adds dimension and a touch of whimsy, love it. This same idea can be created with whatever nautical treasures you find.

Wall Color– Just the right wall color can liven up any space, check out our paint collection in Get Inspired or email us in Just Ask and we will help you select just the right color for your home.

Coastal Motifs – Keeping it simple with a clean and crisp color scheme incorporating simple coastal prints and a bold shell print on the pillow, fabulous.

A Pop of Color- In many coastal homes I design the color scheme is soothing and peaceful, adding a pop of color here and there can be fresh and exciting.
