A Fresh Start

Spring is the perfect opportunity to start fresh, with flowers blooming and birds chirping why not get your projects in motion, get organized and start spring cleaning. I decided that my House Tour category was the perfect place to talk about home organization and spring cleaning as we tour a renovated barn in Gerona close to the border of France. Why not make the surroundings lovely as we tackle a tough job.

High Alpine Ranch: Montana

A while back I was designing the interior of a home in the Adirondacks’s and found this image of a dining room by the talented Lisa Kanning to show my client how fabulous dark window trim can be in a lodge inspired vacation home. I became instantly obsessed with so many of the design details in this authentically Montana ranch that I had to share it with you today in our House Tour category. Read more

A Barcelona Beauty

Our House Tour is straight from Barcelona, Spain and the Natural Park of Collserola. This picturesque home is located in a protected natural area with woodlands, meadows, wetlands and diverse wildlife, featured in El Mueble. Immediately I am drawn to the arches in the entrance and foyer, antique oak floor boards, tinted concrete walls and rustic beams. The interior reflects the concept of bringing the outdoors in, embracing the natural surroundings in the design decisions. Read more

Shabby Chic Influence

In honor of the first day of Spring I decided to go with a question from Just Ask that feels and looks like Spring, Shabby Chic inspired. I was introduced to the style of Shabby Chic design while in high school when the queen of Shabby Chic, Rachel Ashwell’s brand hit the scene in 1989 called Shabby Chic Couture. I was working for a design firm part-time and everyone wanted the Shabby Chic look. I also have parents that collect everything vintage so by the time I graduated from design school I was so over distressing everything to feel Shabby Chic. French Country and other variations of cottage influenced design seem to have taken the place of the Shabby Chic style. The interesting thing is that after designing interiors for the past twenty years the influence of Shabby Chic can still be found in many different styles, it’s just more hip to say “Cottage Chic” these days. Historic Barn Revival

I’m from New Jersey, don’t cringe it is actually quite beautiful here and a wonderful place to raise a family. There are so many myths surrounding my state that I wanted to dispel a few of them and then take you on a tour of one of New Jersey’s treasures, a historic barn from our countryside (yes, we do have a countryside). New Jersey is a collection of vibrant suburban and rural communities with excellent schools, great business opportunities, and millions of acres of parks, lakes, mountains, and farmland. Those who know New Jersey by flying in and out of Newark Airport will typically only see the most congested area of the state. Travel just 10 to 15 miles west of New York City and you’ll reach quaint suburban towns that slowly give way to more rural landscapes. I Dreamed a Dream: Anne Hathaway

What I love about Anne Hathaway is how natural and down to earth her persona is. She grew up in picturesque Millburn, New Jersey just thirty minutes from my home and performed in a regional theater I take my children to called, the Paper Mill Playhouse. Since the day I watched Anne in The Princess Diaries with my daughter I have been a fan and wow, has she come a long way. Nominated for an Oscar this evening for best Supporting Actress for her role as Fantine, a role her mother played in the first U.S. tour of Les Misérables, she is favored to win. Looking stunning here wearing, the “Dorning” dress” by The Row, at the 2013 Academy Awards Nominations Luncheon held at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Now for the behind the scenes tour of Anne’s residence. Read more

Rustic Charm, Modern Influence

Rustic design elements are timeless and create warm inviting environments when used in architecture and interior design. I recently had a reader ask how to brighten up the rustic look, combining rustic charm with modern lines and color. I also have several clients who contemplate painting their exposed wood beams and wood paneling trying to figure out if they should paint them, leave them natural or stain them. Above, the kitchen is the heart of the home and the perfect place to add rustic influences. Read more
